Whether made of stone, brick or wood, all rickhouses serve the purpose of protecting whiskey as it ages. But, everything from location and exposure to building design and materials will affect the whiskey aging within.
Heaven Hill’s current roster of 57 rickhouses provide a snapshot of our company’s constant experimentation with rickhouse design since the end of Prohibition. Over our 84-year-history, we have built about half of the rickhouses ourselves, and they each bear the same general design features: seven stories high, wood frames, wood ricks, metal roofs and siding. The other rickhouses represent an amazing variety of designs we’ve acquired as we’ve grown. Some are single-story buildings. Our Deatsville houses, arguably the most visually intriguing rickhouses in America, feature multi-tiered roof sections that convene at a single peak.
Not surprisingly, the whiskeys coming out of each type can taste noticeably different, even when made from the same mashbill and aged equal lengths of time. Those unique qualities demonstrate the undeniable influence an individual rickhouse will have on a whiskey.

A MIX OF OLD AND NEW PLACED HERE AND THERE
Heaven Hill’s 57 rickhouses are located at six sites in the Kentucky counties of Nelson and Jefferson.
HEAVEN HILL: This is the site of our original distillery, our current finished goods plant, and the Bourbon Heritage Center in Bardstown, Ky. Rickhouses here are: E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z. The 22 rickhouses on this site include structures built from the mid-1930s through 2012. Each have a capacity between 18,000 to 22,000 barrels; the site’s total capacity is 504,000 barrels. Seven rickhouses here were destroyed in the infamous 1996 fire that consumed 90,000 barrels of Bourbon… then 2% of the world’s supply. The fire also destroyed our original distillery, which was located, unfortunately, downhill from the flaming river of whiskey.
DEATSVILLE: Site of the shuttered T.W. Samuels Distillery, Deatsville, Ky. Site rickhouses: AA, BB, CC, DD, EE, FF, GG, HH, II. The unique seven-story rickhouses were constructed in the 1930s and feature three-tiered roofs peaked with elevator shafts at the front. Eight of the houses hold about 19,500 barrels each, while the remaining one holds just 10,100. Total capacity at the site is 154,000 barrels.
GLENCOE: Site of the former Glencoe Distillery, Nazareth, Ky. Site rickhouses: A, B, C, D. Heaven Hill acquired the site in the late 1990s. All four are early designs of different sizes, with elevator shafts above the roof line. This site’s total barrel capacity is 64,600. The rickhouses lie largely secluded off Old Nazareth Rd.
SCHENLEY: Site of the former Schenley Distillery, Bardstown, Ky. Site rickhouses: JJ, KK, LL, MM, NN, OO, PP, QQ, RR. This historic location is home to nine rickhouses: four are the common rectangular seven-story design, averaging 19,600 barrels each; and other five are single-story “flat houses” holding an average of 9,750 barrels each. The site’s total capacity is 112,000 barrels. Rickhouse construction began here in 1936.* One distinguishing characteristic of the larger houses here is the chimney-like peak of the elevator shaft, which houses the elevator’s mechanical components. (Later improved designs lowered the elevator shaft below the roofline.)

COX’S CREEK BARREL PRESERVE: Cox’s Creek, Ky. Site rickhouses: W1, W2, W3, W4, W5 W6, W7 (and four more houses will be built here). Construction here began in 2016 and is planned for completion in 2021. These are Heaven Hill’s largest rickhouses: 315 feet long, 120 feet wide, seven stories tall and with a capacity of 55,000 barrels each. Once completed, the site will house 605,000 barrels. Built on an elevated bluff, the houses enjoy exceptional air circulation and sunshine.
BERNHEIM: Heaven Hill Distillery, Louisville, Ky. Site rickhouses: 1E, 1F, 1G, 1H, 1I, 1J, 1K. The only brick rickhouses in our inventory, these were purchased with our current distillery from United Distillers in 1999. At that time, the houses contained many prized barrels of wheated Bourbon for the Old Fitzgerald brand. Its rickhouses, constructed sometime right before or just after Prohibition, are visible from W. Breckenridge St. in downtown Louisville. Total capacity here is 398,000 barrels.

In June 2022, Heaven Hill Distillery broke ground on a 61-acre lot in the middle of Nelson County, just a short drive from our main campus, the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience. The moment marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter: bringing distillery operations back to Bardstown, more than 25 years after the fire that destroyed the Old Heaven Hill Springs.
